The ever lovely Pinter and Martin have given Lactivist a copy of Sheila Kitzinger’s Rediscovering Birth.
Sheila Kitzinger’s understanding of the complex emotions surrounding birth has led to her being thought of as a personal friend by many of her readers, but she also has a formidable reputation among those in the medical profession who are challenged by her writing.
For many years she has maintained that when birth is reduced to a medical process the experience is diminished and the mother degraded, and that even when the birth is complicated, human relationships are vitally important.
In this revised edition of Rediscovering Birth, Kitzinger explores the universal experience of pregnancy and childbirth and looks closely at feelings and behaviour in pregnancy, the physical and spiritual experience of giving birth, the role of the midwife, the bonds that are traditionally formed between mother and midwife and ideas about birth in many different cultures, and she asks how we can learn from them.
To be in the draw to win a copy of this amazing book just let us know about any family or cultural beliefs about pregnancy and childbirth you have either experienced or heard about.
It could be something to do with the position of the baby telling what sex it is, a superstition about pregnancy, a type of food you have to avoid, a remedy for heartburn or morning sickness….. whatever it is let us know.
You can earn an extra entry for each of these things:
- Liking the Lactivist Facebook Page

with both of my pregnancies I had terrible heartburn… my nan (now in her 80′s) told me I would have babies with a head full of hair…sure enough both were born with very thick and long hair!!!

I was chuckling during my first pregnancy when EVERYONE told me I’d be at least a week overdue as it was my first pregnancy to the extent that when I went into labour at 39 weeks family told me it probably wasn’t the real thing, but Sophia was eager to arrive and came early anyway laying that myth firmly to rest for me!

Heartburn remedy I only heard of very late into my pregnancy and wished I’d known about it before: eating almonds. Totally worked and as a plus, a nice healthy snack

I’m polish and there is many pregnancy superstitions in Poland:
1. If you cut your hair during pregnancy, you cut down baby’s intelligence
2. If you get your pregnant tummy wet while washing up, baby will grow up to be an alcoholic
3. If you crave sweet dishes you’re expecting a girl, if you crave savoury dishes – you’re expecting a boy
4. My personal favourite – pregnant lady should not be denied anything because it brings bad luck LOL

I love number 4 Olga! Pregnant ladies should be denied nothing
I wish that had been a superstition in the UK when I was pregnant!

My midwife and ante natal instructors both thought I was expecting (incorrectly) a boy because I had a ‘neat bump’. Other than that, we did’nt hear much folklore or superstitions, which I found a little bit sad as, even though many are incorrect, such things give life colour!
I’m sharing on Facebook, like P&M and Lactivist, so I’m climing 4 entries!

I had to keep my pram at my gran’s house for four months because it is supposed to be bad luck to have the pram in your house before the baby is born.
When my son was a young baby very kind people would put money in the pram as its supposed to bring good luck:) I liked that one!
Also liked p and m so 2 entries please:)
