THE OXYTOCIN FACTOR by Kerstin Uvnas Moberg
First paperback edition of milestone book on oxytocin.
In recent years there have been exciting scientific discoveries about a hormone whose amazing role in the human body has long been neglected. Oxytocin is the powerful hormone involved in bonding, sex, and childbirth, as well as in relaxation and feelings of calm. It is the mirror image of the stress hormone adrenaline, which triggers the ‘fight or flight’ systems in the body. Much has been written about the latter, but the many-sided importance of oxytocin is at this point known only to those working in obstetrics and physiology and to some psychiatrists.
The Oxytocin Factor is the first book to reveal the importance of the whole oxytocin system for a general audience. Both the new research findings and the potentially beneficial applications of this hormone in reducing anxiety states, stress, addictions, and problems of childbirth are fascinating and of great significance in all our lives.
“I love this book: a scientific text sparkling with clarity while full of empathy for the reader. Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg’s gift for explaining the complexities of our bodies in the most straightforward language helped me to understand how oxytocin makes us human. Her work inspired me in my revision of The Politics of Breastfeeding.” Gabrielle Palmer

It’s corny but it’s got to be the sound of my toddler laughing hysterically because he thinks mummy is the funniest!

Morning smiles from my little girl as I go in to see her. After a night of not seeing each other she has the biggest smiles first thing in the morning

so many things make me happy! I love to sit in my backyard and watch the birds feed on the feeder! I love it when the weather is warm but not humid which doesn’t happen so often anymore New Jersey! I love being able to clean up the backyard with my 17-year-old son. It amazes me every time I look at him and think about him as a baby, nursing, nursing and laughing, looking up at me from the corner of his eye. And now he is this responsible kindhearted young man, who can fix just about anything mechanical. I’m truly blessed!

When I see my boyfriend rolling on the ground with our little 10-months old and making him laugh out loud! And also those moments when we all sit together on the couch (very rare, as our son sits for like 5 seconds and then he runs off to discover something new)… And seeing the first green leaves at the beginning of spring, that’s such a joy! It was wonderful seeing our baby with the ultrasound and feeling him kick. I also feel really good when my sister comes and hugs me even though she’s 21 now!

Well obviously my children and all the things they do make me happy but at the moment, with my husband working away, what makes me happy is the peace at the end of the day when both children are peacefully asleep and I can finally sit down with a glass of wine. Silence is a beautiful thing at times!

This may sound silly but breathing makes me smile. To take a deep cleansing breath and let myself relax into a sigh as i fully exhale makes me feel like im releasing all tension, all negativity and making way for blissful peace. And the best bit is i can do it anytime anywhere, perfect

Sometimes all I have to do is look at my son and I am overwhelmed with happiness. Since his birth, I have had more sustained happiness than I have had in my life. I wake up everyday with my whole family snuggled together and get to spend the day doing fun kid things. We’re still nursing on-demand (which is still a lot at 19 months) and I have told many people that I believe it’s the oxytocin that gives me this overall, continuous happiness.

My two children coming into bed in the morning for snuggles. Being out in our new garden with all the space for the kids to run around, grow veggies and have chickens. Walks by the seaside. And to finish the day, cuddling up to my husband at night!

The smiles on OH’s and DD’s faces when he gets home from work. He knocks on the living room window to her before he comes in and her whole face lights up. When he comes through the door she keeps trying to look for him out of the window then she gets really excited and points and babbles at him when he comes in and they have a big hug and he tells her how much he’s missed her all day
So mushy lol

My little girl blowing raspberries on one of my arms to make her Daddy laugh while he blows raspberries much less effectively on the other! She can laugh so hard she makes her eyes water & has the biggest smile – who couldn’t be in love with that? Pure joy!

For me it’s saying good morning to my little girl when she’s had a good night’s sleep and is sitting in her cot chatting away to herself. And then she sees me and she’s all smiles and arms reaching out to be picked up and her hand starts making the sign for ‘milk’ and we settle down on the sofa for an early morning breast.
