“To some breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world, the ultimate expression of the bond between mother and child. But, for a vareity of reasons, some mothers choose not to breastfeed their children themselves and opt instead for formula milk or, more controversially, using other womens’ breast milk.”

But what would YOU do?

60% of the voters so far would not let someone breastfeed their children.

I think it would depend on the circumstances!

  • Good point Ruth, I have put a poll up on the right hand side, below the gallery with different choices.

  • It’s a tricky one and I’m not entirely convinced I know… I expressed for a milk bank so in theory I agree with sharing milk and if my baby was prem and I didn’t have the milk I’d definitely want to use the milk bank. I’m not sure about physically feeding someone elses baby (or have someone else feed mine) but I think I’d be happy with giving them expressed milk.

I voted for several answers as I’m not against wet nursing in principle. However like Elaine says I think I would find allowing someone else to physically breastfeed my baby very emotionally upsetting. There would have to be extenuating circumstances. I have no problem whatsoever with giving my babies someone else’s breastmilk by other means like bottle or cup. I would happily nurse someone else’s baby though. I admire the woman who nursed those orphans as well as her own baby. The way I see it, breastmilk is far superior to formula so in the ideal situation, I would nurse my own baby, if I couldn’t nurse for whatever reason then expressed breastmilk would be my second choice, followed by wet nursing and then formula as a last resort.

  • The WHO hierarchy for infant feeding is as follows:
    1) breastmilk from infant’s own mother
    2) breastmilk expressed from infant’s own mother
    3) breastmilk from another lactating mother
    4) Artificial milk

So my answer is yes, I would much prefer my child to have breastmilk, either donated, or through cross-nursing, than to give them formula from a bottle.

Even though I grew up in the States I grew up with breastfeeding families. I remember once when I was 7 or 8 years old my siblings and I were at a friends’ house and my one year old sister went down for a nap. My parents went on a walk and my mother was not there when my sister started to fuss and my friend’s mother nursed my sister back to sleep. I remember thinking that was the coolest thing and very handy.
I don’t think I would want my child exclusively breastfed by someone else unless I was unable to feed her myself. However, if I were ever in a situation like the one my sister was in, I think I’d be fine with it. =)
