“‘Baby Gaga’ breast milk ice-cream goes on sale
Victoria Hiley is a mother who is so passionate about breast feeding that she has had her milk turned into ice-cream at Icecreamists, a parlour in Covent Garden.
The 35-year-old has already donated a litre of her breast milk to the new ice-cream parlour.
She spotted an advert on the Mumsnet internet forum offering money to potential suppliers.
Now Mrs Hiley, who works with women who have problems breast feeding, has provided the raw material for a new concoction called Baby Gaga.
‘What’s the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash?’ said the mother of one from Leeds. ‘There’s nothing more natural than fresh mother’s milk.’
The London parlour pays £15 per third of a litre and already 15 mothers have taken up the offer.
Health checks for the lactating women are the same as those used by the NHS to screen blood donors.
Matt O’Connor, 44, who runs Icecreamists, blends the breast milk with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest, which is then freshly churned.
He said he was confident his £14 Baby Gaga would go down a treat with customers.
‘No one’s done anything interesting with ice-cream in the last hundred years,’ he said.
‘Some people will hear about it and go, yuck! But actually it’s pure, organic, free range and totally natural.’

It has taken me a while to work out what I think about this. I’m surprised at myself, I’m surprised that I would be squeamish about eating breastmilk icecream but that I am fine about eating icecream made from cows milk that is stuffed full of chemicals and hormones. I think it’s sad that I am so conditioned to think it is ok to drink milk from another species but weird to drink human milk.
I’m not sure it is going to help normalise breastfeeding either, it might just be another nail in the weird coffin.

I just think it’s a waste – could she not donate it to a milk bank and save lives with it??

Hmmm, no thanks. An interesting concept but I don’t even drink regular milk because drinking the lactations of other animals is a little disgusting to me
Humans would be no different here!

I think this is great! But… as a Breastfeeding mother I am against giving this to healthy folk. I think this would be an amazing option for babies that are bottle fed as they can get breastmilk benefits and for immuno comprised folk. Perhaps when no momma who wants breastmilk for her child is without breastmilk this should be made for others…but perhaps it’d be good right now to keep milk for the babes, cancer patients, and others who need it.
I think it’s a great step toward making it more acceptable…and giving mommas a way to be able to stay home with their babes if they’re unable to afford to. All in all I think this is wonderful!
I’ve been making ice cream with my milk for years. Also muffins, pancakes, and poured it on cereal. My friends have too and as we’re all safe/healthy we have had one another’s concoctions. It’s great for colds, quite sweet, and a great treat on a hot day that everyone can enjoy!

I also cannot donate to a milk bank as my baby is older than 6 months. I was out of the country when she was young enough.
