How long would you breastfeed for (poll)

My personal cut off point for breastfeeding was going to be when my son was 3. I don’t think I had any particular logic in mind I just though that around about 3 would be a good time for me to get my body back. He actually self weaned just before he was 2 anyway so I didn’t have to make any decisions in the end.

I’m really interested in what other peoples personal cut off points are and what reasons would stop you breastfeeding. If you can think of any other reasons please comment below.

Thanks – Lisa

  • My son weaned when he was 4.5. My personal cut off point probably would have been 4, except my daughter was born when he was 3 years, 9 months and she had a cleft palate, meaning she was unable to attach to breast feed. So I expressed for her. My son breastfeeding helped boost my milk supply. he self weaned at 4.5.

  • Hmm, my stance isn’t any of those things. “I would let my child decide for himself when he wanted to wean regardless of age, teeth or vocabulary” ;-)

As it is, he’s three and showing no signs of stopping, despite close-to-shared access arrangements between me and his father. So… I really don’t know. He could decide to wean next week or when he’s seven, up to him, and all the above answers are based on when the *mother* decides to stop; as far as I’m concerned, it isn’t *my* decision, if you see what I mean. :-)

My eldest will be 7 in August, her little sister will be 4 in June. Both started their day by nursing, I can’t see anything changing in the forseeable future! Eldest says she is going to stop on her 7th birthday, but then she’s said that as she’s approached every birthday since she was 3-coming-up-4, and each year has changed her mind……

Weaning is a two way thing in my experience and from what I’ve observed. It’s a bit like a dance. I’ve got no age limit but I have had my part to play in weaning – my now 5YO weaned at 2.5 with no trauma when I was pregnant with gentle encouragement from me. My nearly 3YO shows no signs of stopping but I have some boundaries now – we don’t nurse as much.
