Freewheelers Emergency Volunteer Service (Blood Bikes)
We provide a lifesaving delivery service where the NHS cannot. Staffed entirely by volunteers we provide Staff and Patients in outlying hospitals an emergency delivery service without the need of using expensive taxis or couriers. All via motorcycle.
What does your charity/project do?
We transport Blood, Frozen Baby Milk, Samples, X-Rays & Medical Notes and Medical Equipment. Our motorcycles, equipped with blue lights and sirens can transport items quickly and safely between hospitals out of, hours. We cover every weekday night and all weekends and bank holidays 24/7. This provides a lifesaving service to patients, hospitals and neonatal units ensuring fast and efficient diagnosis, testing and treatment in the fasted possible way.
How does your charity/project support the local community?
We are available to all local hospitals in the local area to provide a delivery service between the hours of 7pm and 7am weekdays, and from Friday 7pm to Monday 7am (weekends) as well as all bank holidays. Further to this we are closely linked with the set up of a local “milk bank” to transport frozen baby milk between donor mothers and the milk bank and premature babies in neonatal care. At present we are assisting in transport of frozen milk from outside the locality.
What do you plan to use the CommunityForce award for?
Maintaining the service which costs in excess of £35,000 per year. This will help our motorcycles continue to handle over 3,000 calls and travel some 130,000 miles each year.
