Expressing breastmilk (poll)

I never much enjoyed expressing, although I got the hang of it after I learnt to let my son activate the letdown process then swapped him fast onto the other side. He, however hated bottles or milk from anything other than me so I stopped trying pretty soon!

How about you? Do or did you express because you needed to, or because you wanted to? Or do you not express at all?

If I have missed out any possible answers please let me know and I’ll add them as options. You can have more than one choice as an answer.

And if you have any good expressing hints please let us know. What pump do you prefer, any positions that work better for you?

I also expressed milk for 3 months as my 3rd baby was born with a major heart defect and was tube fed, I didn’t enjoy it I would have much rather give her the breast but needs must xx

My son will rarely feed off my right breast, and it’s more comfortable for me to feed him from my left, as I have disabilities tht make it very hard for me to position him to feed from my right breast. This means that my right breast is a C cup but my left is an E cup!! So I sometimes pump to even them out a bit!! He’s 10 months old now and we’ve always done it this way.

Yes, because my son was in the NICU for 4 months. He is, and always has been, exclusively breast milk fed though.

You missed off an option on your poll – exclusively pumping is a rarely mentioned option (WHO option 3 before artificial milk) we struggled from day one in hospital and after getting various help. I started pumping and have never looked back still doing it twice a day at 18 months now so my Little girl has mummy milk.
I class myself as a lactivist despite not bf as I am so passionate about breast milk and feel its so important for my little girl to have this I have gone through so much to get to this point (pumping 8 times a day etc)..

Its very common that mums who have prem babies pump but rarely mentioned for others..I know from my board on babycentre that many people do this. I felt very alone before I realised there are other people out there doing this..

  • good point Zoe, I’ll put another option on now, it will make the poll innaccurate for a while but it needs to be there.

I tried, as I have loads of milk and find expressing easy, I thought it would be nice to get an extra hour’s sleep occasionally but baby didn’t take a bottle.
So now I’m looking into milk sharing and donating to a bank.
