Eco Friendly Ideas to Keep the Kids Busy

When the kids are off school it’s hard to keep them occupied without spending loads of cash, but without them spending most of their time in front of the TV. No doubt they’ll want to participate in expensive activities like visiting theme parks, going to the cinema or other expensive days out ideas. There are plenty of other ways to keep the kids busy during half term without breaking the bank, which can make them start being ecologically aware at the same time. Here are some ideas, brought to you by moneysupermarket.com

Get Back To Nature

Many of us don’t appreciate the nature that we have on our own doorsteps. We’ll travel miles to get to the perfect beach, mountain or scenic view, but rarely take advantage of what’s under our noses.  If you live by the coast take the kids to the beach for the day. Wrap up warm and take a bucket and spade and either collect shells or unusual pebbles and then make something out of them when you return home. Alternatively, if you have a forest or nature trail nearby, embark on that. Get the kids to do bark rubbings and do some foraging. This is the best way to teach younger kids about nature as they’re getting firsthand experience in nature’s environment.

Get Recycling

It’s never too early to teach children about recycling and how beneficial it is to our planet.  Although you don’t want to burden smaller children with worries about the planet, there are small things they can do which should hopefully give them the right basis to build upon.  Go through their clothes with them to see if they have any in their wardrobe which are too small and take them the charity shop. Gather all of their old notepads/colouring books/miscellaneous pieces of paper in their room that they want to throw away and explain the basic principles of where paper comes from and that it can be reused. Then drop the paper off into a paper/card bank.  Small steps like this can help to create awareness at a young age and can also be made fun.

Get the Garden Ready for Summer

February is a great time to start planting what you want to see in full bloom in the summer, and if you have Daffodil bulbs planted they should be beginning to sprout.  Take the February half term as a chance to get the kids acquainted with the garden as it’s a fun, active and educational hobby to have. Plus, it will save you some time and effort in the future if the kids develop green fingers!

Use Vouchers

If you do choose to take the kids to an attraction, there are some fantastic money off vouchers available to ease the stress off your bank balance. Here are a few of the best:

  • Get 2 for 1 Alton Towers vouchers from moneysupermarket.com. Simply print the voucher off and present it at the gates and get 2 for 1 on admission.  A fun and active day out for half the price!
  • 25% off admission to the Eden Project.  The Eden Project is built on a disused clay mine and aims to teach people about nature and the world around them. Now you can enjoy this educational and memorable day out with 25% off your tickets.
  • 20% off admission to Chester Zoo.  Visit the UK’s largest zoo and observe more than 4000 animals which range from lions to butterflies.  If the kids are into wildlife this is the perfect day out to inspire and educate them.
