Cow&Gate Recruiting Mums as ‘Feeding Club’ Ambassadors

What do you think of this from Cow & Gate? It’s being emailed to mums across the country with the subject line “ Local part-time work for mums like you!”

“Being a mum is all the experience you need

Weaning. You probably remember it like it was yesterday – ‘Been there, done that, got the food-splattered t-shirt!’ You may also remember, as a new mum, how daunting it could be. But you got through it, you learnt day by day. And now you have the sympathy and experience that this year’s new mums would love to learn from.

That’s why we’re launching the brilliant new Cow & Gate Feeding Club. Relaxed, informal, and in need of mums like you!

What is the Feeding Club?

Run for mums by mums, it’s a fun, interactive session in handy nearby locations. Each session covers baby’s first spoonfuls, trying new flavours and how to make yummy, baby-friendly meals. By the end, mums feel confident and ready to tackle weaning. All hosted by an Ambassador Mum, professionally trained by Cow & Gate.

What’s the opportunity?

As a valued Baby Club Member, you’re an ideal candidate to become a Feeding Club Ambassador Mum. Having been through baby weaning yourself, you could be a natural at helping new mums near you.

We’re not looking for weaning experts, just everyday mums.

Are you passionate about being a mum? Happy talking in front of new people? Feel like a bit of a challenge? Then this is the job for you.

You’ll be specially trained in hosting feeding club sessions. Working locally, the role is part-time over a flexible schedule.

And, of course, we’ll pay you too!

When do I start?

Training begins week commencing 26th March 2012, followed by eight weeks of part-time work. The closing date for applications is Tuesday 7th February, so be quick!”

Best wishes,

Gabbie Barrett
Cow & Gate representative

  • I wish I could read this and think “Wow what an amazing opportunity for both the Mothers they will employ and the Mothers that will benefit from this great scheme, it’s really needed”.

However, I don’t see a need for it. Both the NCT and the NHS provide these classes in my area so you can pay for a class or receive a free class from the NHS.

I’m also thinking that this is against the “CODE” because a formula manufacturer is doing direct marketing to New Mums through these emails.

I don’t trust the formula manufacturers so I’m thinking that although they are offering education for weaning, so we can guess that they are aiming the education at 6month olds and so follow-on milk can be discussed, but in reality we know that women with babies under the age of 6 months will attend the classes and hear about them and think that follow-on milk is necessary for a healthy baby.

This just shows us exactly how much profit the company is making form over priced formula and baby foods. In general branded formulas are twice the cost of generic formulas to help fund the marketing budget which pays for all those tv ads, magazine ads, free stuffed cows and free samples sent out to unsuspecting new Mums.

Well I went along to one of their casting days and was very sceptical… not only were you expected to provide totally un-necessary paperwork – Driving licence, car insurance documentation, passport, utility bill the list went on…. All of which was un-necessary for an interview process!

But it wasn’t entirely clear how it would work, their idea is that it becomes one of the steps you take NCT group, tots group and then must organise a weaning talk. As a mother of 2 children myself I can’t see the idea taking off. Mother’s generally get their advice either from their own mother, midwife, health visitor or generally from other mother’s going through the same stage…

When I was weaning my children at no point would I have phoned up the baby food manufactures and asked them to send someone to my house to discuss weaning!

The interviewers were not parent’s themselves, didnt understand that it was half term week or that organising a chat with somebody at 2pm an hour away from your home would therefore mean you wouldn’t be able to get back in time for the school run at 3pm. the challenges faced by mother’s and no mention of baby led weaning.

ARG this is yet again confusing to many I must admit I have joined all the formula companies emails etc to Find out wht exactly they are doing and to be aware of what they are doing, especialy on the subliminal marketing/ BF lip service fronts, so that I can help others to stay away from the cost money machine that is Formula. For my own body im BREAST all the way but i cant be too scary to everybody, but what i can do Is ensure people are well informed aobut what is coing on in the world. Even then when you tell them aobut what went on in Africa with the Nurses that werent qualified and were promoting tins of Milk for babies they were like “nah they wouldnt” shows how nieve society is. super markets are not who trained either about the outer seal breasks they cannot sell the tin! Shocking!!

over all im a takefood from home kind a gal but for baby food on a comercial front id be inclined to go for family type foods such as ellas kitchen, that is a no preservative aproach. handy if your traveling or cant get home for something if the car breaks down. Why dont we BAN all formula adverts and just let people decide what they feels right for their kids. why not tell them that corn starch/ corn flour is in the milk they buy open their eyes. in the uk you cant get generic formula, its all big names, Cow and gate, aptimil, etc so you will pay a price and a premium one at that over £500 a year in some cases. why not start a page on here LACTIWEAN and show people baby led weaning is the way to go if they lookign at your plate and trying to grab it let them taste it if they can sit up let them have finger foods. every child is mentlay and physicaly different so adapt to their needs. But dont cop out on stuff that tastes bad. have tasted ellas kitchen and thought tahts ok and same with heins mums own but honestly make food and freezer cubes is easy and you lift one out in the morning pop a few in your tubs and by lunch its defrosted ready to heat and eat :)

My baby has been breast fed until he was a year old. I had a difficult time with breast feeding but wanted to keep going and was very happy to get to a year. I do not see any problem with someone giving help with weaning, We all need help as to where to get started making our own meals and even what goes in to a jar, for those people that will not make meals. I have always made all my own meals I only ever get fruit pot and do not intend to change from that however I would of gone to a feeding class as its good to get the help and infomation then you choose the parts that fit with your life style. This help has got to be a better than keep seeing toddlers eatting crisps and kit kats. My 1 year old loves blueberry’s. Some people really need help and if that help comes from cow and gate so be it.
