Find out about Conwy Breastfeeders Peer Supporters 7th March 2012

February 22nd, 2012

Conwy Breastfeeding Friends Peer Supporters have been nominated for the Pride Of Conwy Award and have decided to open their doors to those wanting further information about training to become a Peer Supporter.

Have you ever thought you’d like to help other mothers?  Have you breastfed your children for a 6 months or longer?  If so then come along to Princes Drive Baptist Church, Colwyn Bay, LL29 8LA on the Wednesday 7th March, from 10am-12pm.

You can ask questions about the training and what’s involved.  You can also find out about becoming a Breastfeeding Councillor too.  If you would like some Peer Support yourself, then you are welcome too.

There will be some filming for our awards clip but that won’t take up much time.  Tea and coffee will be available and some friendly faces and children are always welcome.

Polls for partners – do you feel embarrassed when she breastfeeds?

I recently got an email from a dad asking for polls that he could join in on, what a fantastic idea and this is the first of them. If you have any ideas for other polls that partners of breastfeeding mums can do please let me know!

Breastfeeding in Public – Poll

Breastfeeding in Public

View Results

When I first started to breastfeed in public I did feel nervous, mostly, as an unconfident new mum because I thought someone would want to tell me how to do it properly. As my son got older I got a lot more comfortable and breastfed without thinking about it, and without being detected in all sorts of odd places, on the escalator in Ikea being one I can remember!

Id love to hear how you feel about it.

Would you use a Doula for pregnancy, birth and after? poll

Doulas are women specially trained to give emotional and practical support during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period – leading to more satisfying and empowered experiences, and a decrease in interventions, caesarean sections, postnatal depression and an increase in breastfeeding success.

Doulas do what is needed. Doulas can support couples, a mum who is alone, or a mum who has other children that her partner needs to take care of. Alternatively they can do the little things that mean a partner can support the woman in labour such as filling the birth pool, dimming the lights, putting music on and even making tea for the midwives! Or anything in between!

Research has shown that having a doula present at a birth:

* Shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours
* Decreases the chance of caesarean section by 50%
* Decreases the need for pain medication
* Helps fathers participate with confidence
* Increases success in breast-feeding

(Findings taken from “Mothering the Mother” by Klaus, Kennell & Klaus, 1993)

Before now did you know what a doula does?

Why do you breastfeed or formula feed (poll)

This is nothing to do with breastmilk being better than formula, I am just interested in peoples reasons for choosing (if they have a choice) how they feed their children.

I have probably missed out loads of reasons but I am trying to keep them neutral, so that they could apply to both breastmilk and formula. I have not included ‘do you breastfeed or formula feed’ as a question as that is not the point of this poll.

If you can think of any other things that might make you choose breastmilk or formula please let me know and I’ll add it to the list.

You can vote on as many things as you like, you don’t need to choose just one answer.

Expressing breastmilk (poll)

I never much enjoyed expressing, although I got the hang of it after I learnt to let my son activate the letdown process then swapped him fast onto the other side. He, however hated bottles or milk from anything other than me so I stopped trying pretty soon!

How about you? Do or did you express because you needed to, or because you wanted to? Or do you not express at all?

If I have missed out any possible answers please let me know and I’ll add them as options. You can have more than one choice as an answer.

And if you have any good expressing hints please let us know. What pump do you prefer, any positions that work better for you?

How long would you breastfeed for (poll)

My personal cut off point for breastfeeding was going to be when my son was 3. I don’t think I had any particular logic in mind I just though that around about 3 would be a good time for me to get my body back. He actually self weaned just before he was 2 anyway so I didn’t have to make any decisions in the end.

I’m really interested in what other peoples personal cut off points are and what reasons would stop you breastfeeding. If you can think of any other reasons please comment below.

Thanks – Lisa
