Christine acquired Kittykins, a large UK nappy website in 2010 because it was was closing down as the owners were moving out of nappies and on to new things.  Kittykins was first opened in 2003, and specialised in stocking a large range of cloth nappies of all varieties.  The website was designed to have some useful features like interactive tools to help choose which nappies to buy, and see how many you’ll need to get, as well as a star rating system to compare the nappies on factors like absorbency, cuteness, slim fit and ease of use.  It seemed a shame to let a top website like Kittykins simply close.

Christine said “I didn’t set out to be a mumpreneur, but I love it now that I am!

She is married to Iain, an accountant, and they are we’re parents to 4 girls, 3 of whom were in cloth nappies, all of them breastfed – progressively longer each time.

“I got involved in donating breastmilk with my third daughter, when she refused point blank to take a bottle and I couldn’t bear to waste what I’d pumped – I ended up donating milk regularly for several months for the local SCBU.  My last daughter involved a bit of perseverance with the feeding as she was failing to thrive, I resisted pressure to put her on formula and it turned out that was a sound judgement, because she was allergic to cows milk protein!  She was reacting to the tiny amounts coming through my milk, this was diagnosed when she was 6 months old and weighed just 10lbs 6oz!  Having gained no weight for 3 months, I went dairy free on the suggestion of a b/f counsellor from the NCT, and she put on 11oz in a week.  She self weaned at a year but remained dairy free until she was nearly two, when we found she had outgrown the allergy, and she has been on a normal diet since.”

Terry Nappies are the latest Lactivist.net sponsors!

Terry Nappies new lactivist sponsorsHuge thanks to Terry Nappies who are now sponsors of www.lactivist.net.  Lactivist.net running costs are paid by companies who pay to advertise on the  Lactivist Friendly Business Page. Please make it worth their while and visit them at www.terrynappies.co.uk

Christine, who runs Terry Nappies opened it in 2008 when the country was heading into recession and she thought it made sense to have a nappy site selling budget nappies to those who really needed to save as much money as possible.  The website has been popular and there is definitely a lot of interest in terry squares, yet surprisingly few cloth nappy websites actually stock them.

She said:

“Having used them myself I am quite confident in helping others with them.  We added downloadable folding instructions to the website, which has been popular.  We’ve since updated the website and increased the product range, so while the terry squares are a mainstay, we also stock more modern shaped and pocket nappies too, so there’s a whole variety of stuff in one place.  Our unique nappy kits have also been popular, people are often unsure what to get, so we put together a few kits to make buying easy.

Before I was a “mumpreneur” I worked in insurance for a company specialising in insurance for the very wealthy – this gave me a background in high standards of customer service, as our clients tended to have very high expectations!  My nappy know-how comes from personal experience – as you can imagine with 4 babies I’ve changed LOTS of nappies in my time (probably around 18,000, if you assume 4,500 per baby!), and have tried out everything from terry squares to all in ones.  I like the flexibility of working for myself, although the down side is that you never get any time off, because if I don’t do the work, it just doesn’t get done!”

Lactivist.net has a new sponsor – Introducing Plush Pants!

Lets hear a big warm welcome to Plush Pants who are the newest sponsors of www.lactivist.net. They join the growing list of businesses on the Lactivist Friendly Business Page. Please make it worth their while and visit them at www.plushpants.com

Plush Pants was started in 2000, and was bought by Christine in 2004 when it was closing down.

Plush Pants Lactivist Sponsors“I mentioned it to my husband as I intended to buy some cheap nappies in the sale, and he suggested we buy the business instead.  Three weeks later I was running it!  It was a slightly mad decision if I look back on it now, we had 4 children aged 6 and under, we were just about to demolish our garage to start a house extension, and then we bought a business to run from home – the first six months were total mayhem as our house was being knocked about in all directions and at one point the only rooms not affected by the building work were our bedroom, the smallest bedroom, and the downstairs loo!   From humble beginnings we quickly updated the website, and once space allowed we started to expand.

The Plush Pants Nappy Trial Scheme has been going since 2001, allowing parents to try before they buy.  In fact, this is how I was converted to using cloth nappies full time myself!  I found it hard to choose, and was worried about spending a lot of money on the wrong things, so this was an ideal way for me to get started.  I’m passionate about helping others who are unsure to give cloth nappies a go, so the Nappy Trial Scheme is one of my pet projects.  I’ve even got my local council (Oxfordshire) funding free nappy trial kits!”

Plush Pants have a BIG Nappy Sale on at the moment with huge savings! Organic Tots Bots are £6.50, Nature Babies Deluxe Stuffable Nappies £6.95.

There is also an ongoing ‘Nappies in Action‘ section to the website where customers can  win £10 to spend at Plush Pants by sending in cute “babe in cloth nappy” pictures.

Free Relax Kids Introduction to Relaxation for Children on Itunes

Quite often, after a long day of Lactivisting when there is a large flailing 8 year old wanting to co-sleep with me we cuddle up and listen to a Relax Kids meditation cd together. My favorite one is the Nature Meditation but as we are both usually fast asleep before the middle of it I have no idea what happens at the end. We also have the Superhero and Wizard cds.

You can buy them as MP3′s, here is a link for the nature one:

Download with filebox

Regular relaxation can help children manage stress, anxiety while improving their concentration, focus and listening skills. Regular relaxation is pretty important for mums too!

You can try Relax Kids for free because they have a new free app on apple itunes for little ones – as an introduction to relaxation, http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/healthy-star/id479844318?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2

There is also a link to a free Nature Meditations MP3 on the top right of the Relax Kids website – www.relaxkids.com

New Lactivist Sponsors – The Birthing Shirt Company

The Birthing Shirt

I’m really happy to introduce a new business as a new Lactivist sponsor.

The Birthing Shirt Company  is run by designer  Lindsey Benson who is also a proud mother of two boys. They join the band of Lactivist Friendly Businesses that help keep Lactivist running.

Lindsey said:

“Before I gave birth to my first son I had a very hard time deciding what exactly I was supposed to wear whilst giving birth. I was at my most comfortable and relaxed in a T-shirt and leggings, but leggings wouldn’t work for the baby’s delivery and a regular T-shirt wasn’t long enough to cover my modesty!
Obviously during labour the most important thing is the health of mother and baby, and there is very little room for vanity, but I realised through my own experiences that it is natural to worry about exposing oneself to others and I wanted a birthing shirt that would give me confidence and a feeling of calm through this serious yet wonderful event.”

She talked to lots of mums and came up with a list of requirements for the perfect shirt:

  • Loose so it would be easy to move in an active birth
  • In a practical dark colour, as things can get messy!
  • Easy to pop down on the front for breastfeeding, skin-to-skin and kangaroo care
  • Long enough so that walking about wouldn’t expose us
  • Short sleeved for cooling but upper arm coverage for comfort
  • Cut for an expanding bump as regular T-shirts ride up at the front
  • Made in a soft, stretchy, durable fabric that wouldn’t make us sweat
  • Styled to make us look good to feel good
  • Ultimately a shirt that would help not hinder us during delivery

After a lot of research she Lindsey came up with the perfect fabric: Bamboo!

Bamboo grass is the fastest growing plant in the world and requires very few pesticides, making it really eco-friendly. Bamboo is much softer than cotton (like cashmere). It is also breathable and hypo-allergenic with unique anti-bacterial and deodorising properties. It absorbs and evaporates sweat, and its insulating qualities mean it keeps you warm on cold days but will cool you down in warmer weather.

One of the key aims of the shirt is to make skin-to-skin easier, both immediately after birth and beyond, and thus having a positive effect on promoting bonding and aiding breastfeeding. The birthing shirt has also been designed as really practical nursing nightwear with an extended pop down front for easy access for aiding night feeds.

And although The Birthing Shirt is a new business it has already been shortlisted for a ‘Loved by Parents Award’ for Best Product for Breastfeeding which we are very proud of.

You can read more about the Birthing Shirt at www.thebirthingshirtcompany.com and you can also buy them through the NCT shop

Until the end of 2011 there is a special offer for Lactivist readers -  a complimentary bamboo headband with any order they make. You just have to write ‘I am a lactivist’ in the  ‘Instructions to seller‘ section in paypal

And at the moment there is a special offer on the website –  £12 off when purchasing 2 birthing shirts.

You can also find The Birthing Shirt Company on

www.facebook.com/thebirthingshirtcompany       and      www.twitter.com/TheBirthShirtCo

25 g (25g, 50g) double knitting yarn in main colour

This can be done in one of three ways:

  • knitting with the main colour and contrast colour following the chart
  • knitting with the main colour and contrast colour following the instructions
  • embroidering with the contrast colour after making up, using Swiss darning.

(Do an online search for Swiss darning to find some excellent websites with video tutorials.)

Chart method

Work 18 (23, 28) stitches either side of the lettering in m.Then, using c for the letters (shown in black) and m for the background (shown in white), follow the chart and these tips:

  • Twist the 2 yarns at the back every 2-3 stitches so the loops are not too long.
  • In particular, twist the yarns at the beginning and end of the lettering.
  • DO NOT PULL TIGHT, or you will have to donate your hat to the premature baby unit!
  • The knit row reads from right to left; the purl row works from left to right.
  • Keep turning your work to the right side to check the lettering.

The Natural Nursery – what it says on the packet!

I’m proud to have The Natural Nursery as a Lactivist site sponsor. It is run by Arabella who is totally passionate about organic and natural parenting. Among other things she is a nappy and sling expert and runs regular nappy and sling demo coffee mornings in Exeter.

You can find details about the coffee mornings (free cake!) and useful reviews of the things Natural Nursery sells at the Natural Nursery Blog. Please make it worth their while to advertise on Lactivist by visiting them.

A word about Lactivist sponsors

I don’t take a wage from any of the Lactivist sites and the hosting and technical support for Lactivist.net is funded by www.lactivist.co.uk and the lovely Lactivist sponsors. You can see their adverts at the sides of the page and there is a list of them here http://www.lactivist.net/?page_id=1728

Please take a moment to make it worth their while to advertise on lactivist.net, and if you are interested in advertising yourself details are here. http://www.lactivist.net/?page_id=1735 Lactivist.net gets over 1000 unique visitors a day and that number is growing so fast I am going to have to upgrade the hosting so it has more space.

You may notice that I’ve put Google generated adverts at the bottom of the pages now. Every time you click on one of them Lactivist.net gets a tiny bit of money. They are generated by the content of the page so every now and then you might see an evil formula advert – please email me to let me know because I can block them!

Huge thanks!

Lisa

Eco Friendly Ideas to Keep the Kids Busy

When the kids are off school it’s hard to keep them occupied without spending loads of cash, but without them spending most of their time in front of the TV. No doubt they’ll want to participate in expensive activities like visiting theme parks, going to the cinema or other expensive days out ideas. There are plenty of other ways to keep the kids busy during half term without breaking the bank, which can make them start being ecologically aware at the same time. Here are some ideas, brought to you by moneysupermarket.com

Get Back To Nature

Many of us don’t appreciate the nature that we have on our own doorsteps. We’ll travel miles to get to the perfect beach, mountain or scenic view, but rarely take advantage of what’s under our noses.  If you live by the coast take the kids to the beach for the day. Wrap up warm and take a bucket and spade and either collect shells or unusual pebbles and then make something out of them when you return home. Alternatively, if you have a forest or nature trail nearby, embark on that. Get the kids to do bark rubbings and do some foraging. This is the best way to teach younger kids about nature as they’re getting firsthand experience in nature’s environment.

Get Recycling

It’s never too early to teach children about recycling and how beneficial it is to our planet.  Although you don’t want to burden smaller children with worries about the planet, there are small things they can do which should hopefully give them the right basis to build upon.  Go through their clothes with them to see if they have any in their wardrobe which are too small and take them the charity shop. Gather all of their old notepads/colouring books/miscellaneous pieces of paper in their room that they want to throw away and explain the basic principles of where paper comes from and that it can be reused. Then drop the paper off into a paper/card bank.  Small steps like this can help to create awareness at a young age and can also be made fun.

Get the Garden Ready for Summer

February is a great time to start planting what you want to see in full bloom in the summer, and if you have Daffodil bulbs planted they should be beginning to sprout.  Take the February half term as a chance to get the kids acquainted with the garden as it’s a fun, active and educational hobby to have. Plus, it will save you some time and effort in the future if the kids develop green fingers!

Use Vouchers

If you do choose to take the kids to an attraction, there are some fantastic money off vouchers available to ease the stress off your bank balance. Here are a few of the best:

  • Get 2 for 1 Alton Towers vouchers from moneysupermarket.com. Simply print the voucher off and present it at the gates and get 2 for 1 on admission.  A fun and active day out for half the price!
  • 25% off admission to the Eden Project.  The Eden Project is built on a disused clay mine and aims to teach people about nature and the world around them. Now you can enjoy this educational and memorable day out with 25% off your tickets.
  • 20% off admission to Chester Zoo.  Visit the UK’s largest zoo and observe more than 4000 animals which range from lions to butterflies.  If the kids are into wildlife this is the perfect day out to inspire and educate them.

MillenniMUM: Decade of Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Book

My name is Charlene Evans, I am 27 and  married with 6 children.
I was born and bred in Salisbury and still live in the Salisbury area.
I have just written my own book and got it published it is available on Amazon Uk and USA also all good online book stores have snapped it up from waterstones, wh smiths tesco books ect ect.
My book is called Millennimum a decade of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It is called millennimum as I fell pregnant on our first baby at just 16 and a half in the year 2000 and now in the year 2010 just gone i amstill breast feeding our 6th baby
I have had 6 children 6 home births with no pain relief and breast fed them all.
I wanted to write this book to help mothers and mums-to-be as they prepare for pregnancy, labour, and caring for their new special arrival. With 6 kids, 6 pregnancies, 6 labours, I’ve learned a few tricks and tips along the way! This book is about sharing some of the valuable knowledge I’ve gained through my births, providing advice from
someone who has “been there, done that.” You’ll find many of my own personal experiences and anecdotes throughout.
And, although these are my pregnancy life-lessons, each pregnancy is different – this book was written not to `preach’, but instead to share with parents some of the options out there, that are perhaps not as commonly
known.
I believe every parent should make their own personal choice of what they would like to do and how they would like to do it, regarding pregnancy, labour, and raising their child. Again – everyone has different
needs and beliefs, so I think that people should be given the opportunity to make the choices that are best for their family; do what feels right for them and stick to what they believe in.

You can buy many pregnancy books in the shops but this one is different. Most pregnancy books are written by health professionals and are very clinical, filled with long words that half of us don’t understand… By contrast, this book is written for you – from one Mum to another. It’s real – like me – and easy to understand, plus it’s filled with helpful hints for however you wish to do things.
I also have my own stretch mark cream and breastfeeding cream in production which should be ready for march
I was on the news on the radio last week all day and have been in different newspapers and magazines.
I have also been asked to do a documentry on modern motherhood
please feel free to have a look on Amazon to find out more.
