I find these tshirts patronizing and even a bit offensive. I’m pro breastfeeding and breast fed all 3 of my sons for at least 6 mths – just finished the littlest but I’d find it in poor taste to parade my child around in one of these smug offerings.

Hi, S
I designed the first lactivist t-shirt after I was criticized for breastfeeding in public. I found breastfeeding incredibly hard and painful to start with but with expert help and grim determination I was able to successfully breastfeed my son until he self weaned just before he was 2.
After going through so much to give my son the best start in life I was really hurt to be criticized, especially as it was in a playgroup! And midwives suggesting I topped him up with formula were equally hurtful.
So, when I started to put my son in lactivist t-shirts the comments stopped, and I met lots of mums who had had equally horrid experiences.
Sorry you think they are smug, they were not designed with smugness in mind at all, more pride in my own tenacity, but if you have read this now you know why I do what I do.

smug: contentedly confident of one’s ability, superiority, or correctness
Since the body of scientific evidence supporting breastfeeding as the only safe and appropriate form of food for infants is so mountainously overwhelming, it is easy to be confident that breastfeeding is the correct and superior way to feed a baby. This kind of confidence creates a feeling of contentment. Who wouldn’t be happy knowing that they are doing what is right for their child.
So, what is WRONG with being smug?

What a shame that you feel the need to criticise Lisa’s designs – even if you do find them smug and patronizing is there cause to spout the same in public? No one is asking you to buy one or wear one after all!
I dressed my daughter in a Lactivist tee when she was small because a. I was proud of the fact that she was bfed despite difficulties and b. Because I think it’s important to show support for breastfeeding mothers in the UK where I believe less than 1% of kids are bfed beyond 6 months (I haven’t checked so don’t quote me!) and where women are still made to feel uncomfortable with bfeeding in public.
Lisa, keep up the good work I think your stuff is a great celebration of breastfeeding and all the reasons it is so important to do it if you can. I
going to feature your tshirts on our website soon!

Hoola, you are almost correct with the breastfeeding statistic. In the UK, less then 1% of babies are exclusively breastfed until 6 months. Given this is the minimum recommended age for starting solids, this is both very sad and worrying.
s.dhillon, anything that anyone can do to help promote breastfeeding as normal in this country should be encouraged and celebrated. If breastfeeding was accepted as normal in the UK, maybe you and other people like you would breastfeed for longer than 6 months. After all the WHO (and the Scottish Government) recommend breastfeeding until at least age 2 and beyond if mum and baby want to.
