“Dear Aunty Lactivist My 2 year old daughter nurses all night long and drives me mad twiddling/picking the free nipple. I know prevention would’ve been easier than curing what has now become a habit, but any suggestions how I can get her to leave it alone? Am sore from this aswell as the night long suckling…& tired :( Thank you in advance E”

http://www.lactivistbling.co.uk sells nursing necklaces for little hands to fiddle with. Or you could try any necklace that safe for them to grab that won’t break when they pull it. The ones on LactivistBling have been tested for break strength.

Wear a comfortable bra , stitch a button on to it (very securely) so your child can fiddle with that instead and expose the opposite breast for nursing, just a thought, could be crazy but worth a try:)

my son was obsessed with this, and still is a bit, even now, 11 months after weaning. i couldn’t bear it so offered him my tummy button instead. sounds bonkers but it worked!

@ E – I totally sympathize. Having kept going for 2 years I feel like throwing the towel in due to ‘fiddling’ all night. Not to mention swapping sides, a MILLION times.
@ Berny – I like this idea. In fact, I have spare buttons and could do this before tonight if I’m quick!

LOVE all the suggestions! My son is an epic fiddler at the breast. He is an older nursling in the slow process of weaning, and since he’s very verbal, I asked him one day, “Why do you always fiddle with my other side?!” His response? “Because it makes the milk pour into my mouth faster.”
May not be true for every mother, but seems in his little way, my son just “knew” how to get the most out of his nursings!

I struggled with this for awhile with my older daughter (now 4). She just helped herself anytime of the night which definitely disrupted my sleep and certainly by the age of 2 a child is capable of sleeping through the night…
First of all, I started wearing my nighties to bed again (I prefer to sleep nude). This stopped the grazing.
Secondly, I put her TO bed on a camp bed at the end of my bed. Sure, she ended up with me again, but at least we started there. Later on, I put a stop to the climbing into bed with me by giving her a kiss and a cuddle and sending her back to her bed. (But this is less useful if you want to keep her in bed with you a bit longer… though my daughter still comes for a morning cuddle.)

My DD used to pick a raised mole.. i couldn’t bear the nipple thing… then the mole got sore. I have a cheap button down nighty and cover up the other breast and mole whilst the other is exposed…it worked for me
