Dear Aunty Lactivist,
Does anyone know a way to boost your breast milks calorific value. I’ve been breast feeding for nearly 11 weeks and my baby is not putting on much weight, he’s gone from the 75th centile at birth to under the 0.4th in his red book.
I’ve been expressing and putting him on the hind milk then topping him up with EBM after, been doing that for 4 weeks and yesterday was weighed and he hasn’t put on any weight in a week.
I still want to breast feed but I’m now having to top up with formula after a feed. Any ideas anyone on a way to boost my milk?

  • Is he producing enough wet nappies? If you top up with formula you will disrupt your breastmilk supply so that is to be avoided if you can. My son was dinky in his red book too, busy producing brain cells instead of fat :-) This is very useful, and reassuring – http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/weight-gain_increase.html

  • Feeding on demand lots and lots is the best way to boost your milk. Expressing and formula confuses your body. Can you you have a breastfeeding “holiday” where you just stay in bed relaxing, eating, drinking and feeding lots and lots and lots?

He feeds two hourly and I’ve got loads of milk it’s not a supply problem I think it’s that my milk isn’t good enough.

I know that this may seem silly to ask but are you trying to loose weight? Make sure your eating plenty and drinking planty too. Feed on demand even tickling babies toes to make sure they don’t fall asleep too soon at the breast.

    Keep going:)

Please resist the urge to top up feed – you’ll irreversibly change your baby’s gut flora which will directly effect his immune system development. If your supply is fine & baby’s happy, producing lots of poo & wee, then you’re probably just fine. I’ve got 3 children – long term breastfed them all. Weekly weighing can make you anxious, especially as I’ve found that some Health Visitors compare your breastfed baby to formula fed ones.

Just stick him on the breast & wait till he’s finished – nature’s got this one covered.

I could’ve wrote that, each time with my 3. What you need to do is make sure firstly that you’re eating/drinking plenty, check babies latch, see a breastfeeding counsellor to back you up, reassure you, THEN get stubborn on that health visitors ass! Took till my 3rd baby for me to nurse successfully past 3mths. Top ups didn’t help, just caused nipple confusion. Good luck x
