Dear Aunty Lactivist

Is this a 16 weeks growth spurt?

My daughter is suddenly feeding lots and is quite clingy – all of which I am attributing to a growth spurt but might this also be affecting her bowel movements?

She used to ‘go’ every day, first thing in the morning but last week she went 4 days with no poo so I gave her a drink of cooled boiled water which seemed to help.
It’s now been another 2 days – might it be linked?

  • here are some replies from the Lactivist Facebook Group:

“assuming baby is exclusively breastfed, it is unlikely she is constipated. she is probably making good use of the breastmilk especially if she has had a growth spurt, so there may be little waste. unless she is producing rock hard stools after lots of straining, i wouldn’t worry at all.”

“As long as she is making more than 6 wet nappies a day, she’s had enough breastmilk. ”

“From memory both my boys went from several a day to 1 a week around that age, for about 3 weeks then back to normal. I’d say growth spurt related & just keep feeding wa normal (no water)”

“This happened with my first son and i was panicking, its just that their little body becomes more mature so can use all of the breast milk and reduce the waste! he went from a couple of poos a day to 1 every 5 days or so!”
