Dear Aunty Lactivist I was wondering if anyone here has had experience (and success) with breastfeeding a baby with a small mouth and nipple/areola that are large? I was unsuccessful with bub #1 and ended up exclusively pumping .. The midwife for this second pregnancy said it could’ve been because of the size of bub’s mouth.. Was a shock because I hadn’t heard of that speed bump before and want to be more prepared this time around .. Would love any stories, links, advice, etc.. (hoping not to try shields).. Thank you

I have experience with a baby with a really small mouth and I had pretty big nipples. To be exact, I was told that I had the perfect ‘breastfeeding nipples’ because of their size. I learned that it was all about the latch, and making contact ASAP. I would also say that in my case my breasts were very sore 2 weeks before and leading up to delivery, and I did things to toughen them up. One thing that worked for me was taking a dry bath-cloth and rolling it up and then going across my nipples with it. This seemed to prep my breasts for the marathon of nursing that was to come. I was also extremely determined after having an emergency c-section that I would nurse ‘no matter what.’

Hi, I have quite wide nipples that don’t stick out much, and had problems feeding my 3 children. The first 2 weren’t able to latch on until they were around 3 weeks old so I expressed until then (repeatedly trying to latch them too). With my 3rd, I was anticipating that this might happen, so I think I was more prepared and relaxed about it. She didn’t latch straight away on to me, but did when my best friend breastfed her (she has narrower nipples!), and she then latched on to me. I fed her with a syringe too for the first few days as she was very sleepy and would fall asleep quickly, but from day 5 or so she would feed from me fine.
I also have Raynaud’s phenomenon which caused it’s own problems, and we have had thrush too, but the latch has been ok this time!

I forgot to write above that my first 2 went on to breastfeed for 13 months and 18 months once we got going!
