I’d suggest the mother expresses as often as the baby would have fed… Supply is well established at this point and won’t just disappear… Once baby is well enough, put baby back to breast and feed on demand… xx

This poor mum
my heart goes out to her. As the previous poster said expressing, if possible with a double hospital grade pump. If possible 8 times per 24 with a before bed or during the night pump.
Mum may find yield is low at first, especially if stress levels are really high and baby isn’t feeding – more so if mum isn’t used to expressing and has always fed directly; milk ejection reflex may be hampered and if so please tell mum not to feel discouraged if yield is less than expected initially – it doesn’t mean the milk isn’t there.
There are some good tips for expressing here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Top-Ten-Tips-For-Expressing-Breast-Milk&id=1669740 Some mums also find having something that smells of baby, a photo or them nearby may help – but this depends on the situation as it could increase stress if mum is very anxious about baby. Other mums find completely zoning out and not thinking about expressing helps too!
If friends/family want to help out, trying to help ensure mum eats well at this difficult time can also protect supply. In times of stress we often cut calories and less than 1700 per day could compromise supply.
If mum can’t eat much eating nutrient dense foods can help eg porridge with seeds/nuts ground and mixed in, perhaps adding dried fruits when cooking. Soups can be easier to keep warm and grab as and when and again can be chocked full of pulses/lentil etc. Anyone handy baking could knock up some oat biscuits/flapjacks.
Nursing tea’s, fenugreek or suchlike may also help.
